Questions and Answers

Tell us why you chose Atlas Homewares for your kitchen design.
I selected the Logan pulls in Warm Brass. Its sleek profile and the warm finish complemented the unique design we created for this kitchen. From the floating shelves to the round walnut countertop, this space had customization all over it. I decided to color block the cabinets to add interest to the space. In doing so, I was able to mock the cabinet design with the Logan pulls, which was the perfect touch that pulled this kitchen together.
Describe the kitchen and how you fulfilled your plans for the space.
The existing kitchen was VERY traditional, which did not suit the new homeowners’ taste or functional needs. They LOVE to cook and have all the kitchen tools to create anything from Italian dishes, to Asian cuisine, to the finest pastries. We spent time meticulously organizing and accounting for all her existing utensils and tools in order to take advantage of her new space.
Did you run into any challenges with this specific project?
They needed space to store all of their cooking utensils and their current kitchen didn’t offer that. The kitchen was confined and adding additional square footage was not possible, therefore, our biggest challenge was to fit all their storage and appliance needs into the existing space.
Tell us about yourself. What is your design style, passion, and/or inspiration?
My designs are not limited to my personal preference. I love what I do because I get to know my clients and draw most of my inspiration from their individual personalities. I take into account their style displayed throughout the home. I can appreciate everyone’s taste, even if it’s “not me.”
Where do you go to get new ideas and inspiration?
Most of my new ideas and inspiration stem from conversations I have while walking throughout my clients’ home. We discuss things that they value, and I use those things to inspire my designs. Some examples include pieces of artwork, Grandma’s China and an antique hoosier cabinet.
What interior design trends are you seeing today?
White cabinetry will always be popular and classic. However, there are so many new shades of white to use now. Finding a slightly off-white with a warm grey undertone is trending, as well as adding white oak to the space. Hidden pantries are also becoming more popular.
What hardware trends are you seeing today?
I’m seeing hardware become bolder by incorporating multiple textures and materials within one piece. Mixing metal with a textured leather, satin and knurled detailing, and matte black with warm brass are the trends I am seeing most.
Do you have any tips about how to choose the best hardware for your space, lifestyle and/or style preferences?
Hardware is key on cabinetry since function is important to me. Finding something that is comfortable for each individual’s hands is vital. I point this out to homeowners and they are glad to try out multiple styles. Some find that their hands don’t fit into what they thought they wanted! I do the same for placement of hardware, so I ask the clients to open and close a door to see where their hands go naturally.
What’s the best interior design lesson you have learned?
In my 16 years of being a kitchen and bath designer, I have learned there isn’t just one important lesson learned, but many.
