Questions and Answers

Tell us about why you chose Atlas Homewares for this kitchen design.
I found Atlas Homewares at a local cabinet store and immediately knew I wanted to use their products in my home. Not only does Atlas offer a wide variety of sizes and styles, but they go above and beyond with their customer service. Having the ability to order samples, along with their quick delivery, made my experience with Atlas perfect. I ultimately chose the Bronte pulls in Slate (SL) for our kitchen renovation. I used four different size pulls for this project ranging from 3” to 11 5/16”.
Describe the room/project and how it fulfilled your client’s plans for the space.
Our kitchen needed a complete overhaul. It’s the centerpiece of our home and where we spend most of our time as a family. Our outdated kitchen didn’t reflect our style in the least. It was important for the space to feel bright and airy and have durable and low-maintenance elements for our family. It was equally as important for the kitchen to have character that it was so desperately lacking. I achieved this by adding Shaker Style white cabinets, oversized white subway tile, honed granite countertops and reclaimed wood floating shelves.
Did you run into any challenges with this specific project?
We had quite a few challenges during this specific project, the main one being unexpected pipes running through a wall that was supposed to be removed. We had initially planned to open an entire wall between the kitchen and our sunroom; however, after pulling back some drywall, we noticed quite a few essential pipes that would prevent us from doing so. It forced us to change our plans completely.
Tell us about yourself and your firm, your design style and/or passion/inspiration?
I loved decorating for as long as I can remember. I used to fill my bedroom closet with artwork I had drawn, asked my parents to paint my room different color, and filled my bookshelves with little trinkets that would make my room feel special to me. The fact that you can completely change the look of a room by simply adding a few special touches has always been fun for me. Styles constantly change, but one thing remains true – you can always turn a bland room into the space of your dreams just by adding those special touches. I would consider my design style to be a mix of modern farmhouse with traditional touches. As I have grown, so has my style. I have gone from loving a bright red kitchen to an all-white kitchen with pops of natural wood and texture. I love making our home feel cozy and inviting. Having space where the family can gather for game nights, family dinners, or movie nights was the most important.
Where do you go to get new ideas and inspiration?
Inspiration and new ideas come from the details in fabric colors, wallpaper patterns, or tile designs. My inspiration lately comes from my daughter. She has taught me to see beauty in the small things that I otherwise would have overlooked.
Are there any hardware-specific trends you're excited for in 2021?
I like the matte black pulls as well as the continued use of brass. Both give a very distinctive look by adding personality where it’s least expected.
What hardware trends are you seeing?
I believe we'll see more statement hardware trending. The fun thing is, if you can match or use a backplate to cover the existing hardware holes in your cabinetry, it's easy and inexpensive to change out.
What’s the best interior design lesson you have learned?
The best design lesson that I have learned is always to keep learning and evolving as a designer while staying true to yourself. Styles constantly change. It would be best to learn from each new style or new trend as they come along, but remain true to your core beliefs as a designer.
